Ferns are abundant where I live. In fact – I live only several blocks away from a lovely forest trail. While observing the ferns, I realized they’ve been around since the dinosaur ages. There are fossils to prove this. The survival strength of ferns inspired me to paint them.
Paintings teach me something in the end. I was stepping away from the fern theme, and doing falling maple leaves which symbolized a shedding of some sort of layer on a spiritual level in my personal life. Essentially, I was becoming more of myself.
Inspired by the singing and bustling of forest birds in the spring and the summer. When I started these series of paintings on a tiny 2″ x 2″ canvases, I wanted the size of the canvas to capture the millions of tiny moments of family life in the trees.
